Banned Books Week 2014

It's BACK! Happy Banned Books Week 2014! This event is all about celebrating the freedom to read. (Also, Happy Banned Websites Awareness Day, today - Wednesday 9/24).

If you stop by the LMC (I'm hoping you do!), you will notice some displays containing partially hidden books. These 75+ books are Dartmouth High School Library books. Throughout history, these titles have been challenged, banned, burned, censored, restricted, and removed in other libraries across the United States, as recently as this year. Unfortunately, this still happens today in the 21st century.

A library is a place where people can come to find information about all topics. A librarian’s job is to promote, provide, and protect the freedom to read and the freedom of choice. How would you feel if someone you don’t know told you that they personally disagreed with a book, and therefore, you couldn’t read it?

A library is a place where you can choose the materials you would like to read, and others can do the same. So choose a book, any book, and read…because you can! Not everyone across the U.S. can do the same.

P.S. Check out this week's Huffington Post article about the most frequently challenged books since 2013 (done up in infographics and pretty pictures, based on data published by the American Library Association).

Lives Change @ Your Library: School Library Month 2014

April is just around the corner with lots to celebrate! April is School Library Month and National Poetry Month. We're celebrating this year's School Library Month Theme - Lives Change @ Your Library - with books that can change your life. Take an opportunity this month to recommend a life-changing book to a friend. Maybe you read something in the last year that helped you to think about life a little differently. Maybe you read something in middle school that still resonates with you today. Books can change our lives in powerful ways.

Check out this month's book display in the LMC (and the titles featured on the sidebar of this blog) for something new to read that could change your life this month!

Also, grab a book of poetry from our poetry display during this year's National Poetry Month. Has a poet or a poem been life-changing for you? Now is the time to share it with a friend, a teacher, or even with the world in a tweet or a Facebook post : )
